The type of performance that I would be the most comfortable at as an audience member is at a jazz club. Personally, I enjoy myself more when I am in an environment that is easygoing and relaxed. The textbook states that at a jazz club “rhythmic groove is expected to flow and feel loose.” From the jazz performance video, it can be observed that the setting is a club. These club like spaces tend to be smaller and people can relax, sit down or dance, socialize, and possibly enjoy a meal while listening to creative improvised music. Another way people are able to feel relaxed and loose is that they are not expected to wear formal clothing, they can wear casual and comfy clothing. Jazz club performances are very similar to pop concerts in which the clothing is also casual.
The performance that I would feel least comfortable in would be a symphony orchestra concert. It is made up of 4 parts: an overture, concerto, intermission, and symphony. It is expected for the audience to remain seated and quiet throughout the performance and there is no interaction between the audience and the performer. The expected behavior of the audience is the reason why I would feel more comfortable in the jazz club performance.

Hey, I actually didn’t consider how clothing expectations of the audience can impact our comfort. It is true that having to dress formally can make us, as the audience, more uncomfortable. Aside from that, I like how you talk about the specific aspects of a jazz club that make it comfortable and entertaining. I also really like how you compared jazz clubs to pop concerts, which I’m sure a lot of people today are familiar with.
I completely agree with this. I could not be part of that behavior that the audience is expected to have. I would love to move around and be freer which I could do at a place similar to a jazz club.
