The artist I chose for the blog is Billie Eilish. She is a 17 year old female artist whose music has become widely popular as a result of her unconventional, but beautiful, music style. Along with an unusual music style, Eilish is also known for her strange fashion sense which she is often criticized for. Her eccentric and unapologetic attitude has given her great recognition in the music industry.
The song I chose to analyze is “Idontwannabeyouanymore.” This is a song I came across when I was sad one day and wanted to listen to music that would enhance my sadness. It is one that never fails to make me cry because of the deep message that is expressed in the words. Not only do the words work to evoke this emotion of sadness, but the music itself and the elements she uses also help accomplish this goal.
Eilish’s melody uses conjunct to create a smooth flowing tune that intensifies the emotions and messages expressed in this song. The distance between the pitches is short in most parts of the song. However, when there is a greater gap between two pitches, she stretches the words slowly to reach the higher pitch in a way that makes it flow smoothly rather than being abrupt if she used disjunct. The texture Eilish uses is homophonic in that the melody is highlighted with a simple chordal accompaniment on the piano. The percussion also plays a vital role in the background with every other beat being emphasized and the words placed on those beats being stressed. The word placement with the beat makes the messages of the song clearer as the most important words are stressed and have emphasis placed on them.

Hey Gaitree, I totally agree with your analysis. I’ve never heard of this singer until today and they way she sings softly with the percussion playing in the background is just so calm and very enjoyable. The melody is very smooth and very consonant. Along with the tempo of the song, its very slow paced and it fits perfectly with the background percussion sound. You can definitely see the message she is trying to give. This is very nice song and song that definitely should be heard when feeling sad.
