The song I chose to write about for this blog is Lovely by Billie Eilish featuring Khalid. Billie Eilish is a 17-year-old rising pop star who has built a huge fan base over the past couple years. Khalid is also an up-and-coming artist who is slowly, but surely, climbing the charts all across the world. This song is categorized as Alternative/indie which is interesting since I never considered that I would like music from these genres (because they are unfamiliar to me.) This song always sticks with me because I actually performed it for a show at my high school. It was one of the first times I ever sang something at school and it was a really fun and interesting experience, as we were able to play around with different harmonies. It’s actually the reason I started falling in love with harmonies and the way they sound. Two elements that continue to stand out to me when I listen to this song are harmony and texture. As we discussed, harmony refers to the sounding of two or more pitches at the same time. In this piece, both artists sing the chorus with different pitches creating a consonant harmony, one pleasing to the listeners. Their voices already complement one another and creating a harmony only further emphasizes the way that two artists are coming together to create one harmonic sound. This type of harmony conveys the serenity or tranquility the artists hope to create in their audience through their slow-paced, meaningful song. In the background of the chorus you can hear chords being played on the piano that match the flow of the song; The musical line created by the piano (in the beginning) stops and the chords, in a way, guide/accompany the vocals using compatible pitches. For texture, I was stuck between polyphony and heterophony but I think it falls more under heterophony. This is because Khalid and Billie Eilish, if you listen closely, are singing remotely the same melody, just slightly different from one another. I wasn’t entirely sure what was deemed a line “independent” when considering polyphony, but the definition of heterophony matched my thoughts more closely. What confused me was the fact that there were other lines, like the initial piano melody, which could indicate that lines were independent of one another and sounding at the same time, aligning with the definition of polyphony. All in all, the separate musical parts that came together for this piece really contributed to the audience’s reception of the message(s). The harmonies and texture worked well to make the song sound full and complete, bringing pleasant satisfaction to the listeners.

I love this song! I recently saw a short choreography video that used a remix of Lovely–the visual symbolism of the dance really put the lyrics in a new light for me.

This is one of my favorite songs too. I never knew that song was categorized as alternative /indie because those are two genres I don’t really listen to very often but, I love this song. Also, I agree with you that the harmony in this song stands out. It’s my favorite thing about the song because it sounds so pleasing when they sing together.
