I choose the country music genre, title “The Pill” released in 1975 by an American country music singer Loretta Lynn. The song was written even earlier by multiple writers; Lorene Allen, Don Machan, T.D. Bayless and Loretta Lynn herself. This song was recorded back in 1972 the same year birth control was legalized for all Americans. The song came out when there were the conservative society-old thinking country’s people all over. This is the first song that talks about women’s liberation regarding birth control which hits no. 70 in the Billboard HOT 100 and hit no. 1 in Canada’s country track. However, this women’s lifechanging conceptual song brought controversy at that time and was banned in some of the radio stations in America, because of its relation to women’s freedom on birth control and the society was also living far behind this concept.
The piece depicts an obsession of a woman/wife who gets dominated by her husband and gets pregnant year after year. Moreover, this song breaks stereotypes like women stayed at home, give birth to babies and wear an old maternity dress. Also, the narrator expresses her happiness of getting a pill after being so tired of becoming a house woman and yearly mother. The lyrics “You’d show me the world” and “Is a bed and a doctor bill” symbolize the narrator’s man/husband promised that he would give all happiness to her instead she only gets maternity pain and sorrow. The lyrical satire is the comparison of babies to the chicken of the farm symbolically talks about women’s world without pill throughout the song. So, this duple metered song sounds comic, can feel her laugh somewhere in the song. Although the song has an aggressive and painful message, her voice/harmony sounds pleasing, because of its satirical lyrics. Throughout the song, Lynn completely rejects the then societal concept of male domination on women’s freedom regarding babies and dresses. In addition, this song feels like somehow is related to Lynn’s personal life as she has her own six children and lots of siblings. So, through her song, she influenced other rural women who were isolated about the birth control pill and scared to use. Also, she became the voice and set an example that woman also has the right to decide about their future, that creates liberate society.
