The pop R&B song from Beyoncé known as “If I Were A Boy” was published in 2009. This song emphasizes on the gender roles of how a man should behave when he is in a relationship with the woman he thinks he’s in love with in which Beyoncé portrays within the lyrics. At the beginning of the music video, she mentions words of what a relationship should consist of. The way Beyoncé describes how a man should act is to be loving, caring, loyal and compassionate etc. A men’s gender role/expectations should relate with those qualities in order to define you as a good man. However in every day life, some of these qualities don’t even pertain to a man’s gender role. Some women expect a man’s gender role to be more of the hyper masculinity side. Within the lyrics, Beyoncé seems to be taken for granted and she wants to make a man understand what he’s been doing wrong and because of this, he can lose the perfect woman who has been by his side regardless of him not showing affection. With this said, we can tell that Beyoncé rejects the gender role. She expects a man to be the contrary of what she went through based on the story she told in her lyrics. One musical characteristic about this song is the consonant harmony. It’s a very pleasing song which brings the listener mixed feelings about it. It can be sad and happy at the same time because within the lyrics, she expresses herself as wanting to overcome this situation and be strong after all.

OMG love this song! its such a good example of switching gender roles. I love the cop scene in the music video.
Imagine! even the super star Beyonce wants to be a boy. Her wish to dress what she wants and chase after the boys seems hard to reach because the stereotype and expectation for a good woman in our current society is hard to change.
I also just did a song by Beyonce and I totally agree with you that she disregards gender roles in most of her songs. This song is also a prime example of her saying “no” to how society has created roles for men and women. You did a great job explaining her expectations of how men should behave in relationships compared to how they actually behave.
I also did that song. I completely agree that Beyonce is a singer who discusses gender roles within her songs. This was a song that described the way men are supposed to behave in a relationship and their everyday lives based on what the world thinks today. I agree that the song has a constant harmony because the music is very pleasing with her voice.
