The synthesizer, a piece of musical technology, has a significant impact on majority of the songs created in modern day. A synthesizer is an electrical musical instrument that produces audio signals which is then transformed into sounds. One of the earliest synthesizers was invented during the 1870s by an American electrical engineer named Elisha Gray. This instrument was a “remote electromechanical musical instrument that used telegraphy and electric buzzers that generated fixed timbre sound”. Eventually, the synthesizer became more innovated and advanced through the progression of time. In modern day, the synthesizer can copy virtually any type of sound, which makes it able to mimic or imitate the sound of a traditional instrument such as the piano or guitar. Unfortunately, I do not have any experience with a synthesizer, but I would definitely enjoy learning how to use one.
I chose the song “Alone” by Ahmet Halici to provide an example for the sounds that can be created by a synthesizer. The song “Alone” falls under the deep house genre category. Deep house music includes soulful vocals and pleasant dissonant melodies. It typically involves musical technology such as the synthesizer, keyboard, and drum machine. In this particular song, the main beat drop plays an instrument that I assumed to be a baglama, a stringed Turkish musical instrument. The song also has a mixture of drumming beats and a piano. All of these instruments are imitated by the synthesizer to create the music in the song.
