In the opening scene of the movie Get Out, Logan, an African American male is lost at a dominant white neighborhood. Logan was searching for an address at Edgewood Lane while he was on the phone with his friend. While he struggles to find his destination, he sees a white car passing by him and suddenly it took a U-turn and came towards him. He noticed the neighborhood being creepy, and when the car came towards him he decides to ignore it and turn back on his destination for today. As he was walking away, he noticed the music getting louder and when he looked back he saw the door was open. Suddenly, the man from the car choked Logan, causing him to lose consciousness. He put the body in the trunk of his car. The movie as a whole, is about an African American man who discovers the secret about his white girlfriend’s family.

In the opening scene, there was a lot of  diegetic sounds. It opens with the crickets chirping, Logan’s heavy breath, the barking dog, music and sound from the car, and finally the sound when Logan was being dragged to the man’s car. The depth of the night adds to the amplitude of the sound that makes the scene more creepy. Although, the diegetic sounds plays an important role in this scene, there was also nondiegetic sounds. For example, when the man started to drag Logan, the music became nondiegetic because the music increased in volume and a few instruments were added at the end of the scene. The non diegetic music was Run Rabbit Run by Flannagan and Allen.

The music adds a certain interest and curiosity as to what will happen next, the music Run Rabbit Run was perfectly used at that scene to add a puzzle of confusion. Without the music, the scene became uninteresting just as the clip we watched during our class session. The consonant harmony, tempo and the upbeat brings an intensity feeling. The portion, “Run rabbit, run rabbit, Run! Run! Run! Don’t give the farmer his fun! Fun! Fun! ” exemplifies that the protagonist will most likely be running from something, most typically- fear. It does create emotion for the audience because when I first watched the movie I was curious and full of mystery.

  1. Hi Showrav, I totally agree with your statement that music adds to the intrigue of what happens subsequently. As I watched the short clip and heard the music included, I was wondering and seeking to know what would happen next to the man.
