I chose the scene from Get Out. This scene is the opening scene in the movie. The scene begins with this random black man walking through a suburban neighborhood. He’s on the phone with someone and he says “you got me here out in this creepy confusing ass suburb”, so it can be implied that he’s not familiar with the neighborhood and he’s meeting someone. He hangs up a few seconds later and keeps walking down the street, sort of mumbling directions to himself. A car then pops into the frame, driving down the street in the opposite direction that the character is walking in. However, this doesn’t last long because as soon as the car passes him, it makes a U-Turn and parks up next to the guy. The guy looks at the car and gives the driver a little head nod, however the driver cannot be seen and is hidden in the darkness of his car. You can also hear a music coming from the car. The guy starts walking again sort of confused about that little moment, and as he starts walking again, the car continues to drive up next to him. The guy starts mumbling again saying stuff like “keep on walking bro, don’t do nothing stupid just keep walking”. He then decides to do a 180 and start walking in the other direction to ensure his safety saying stuff like “not today”. He then starts to walk into the street to cross it and he decides to turn around. The music playing in the car then begins to play louder as the car comes into frame. The car is parked with the driver side door open and the music blasting. He’s confused and all of a sudden a man with a biker helmet comes from the darkness and starts to grab and strangle the man. After choking him unconscious, he drags his body over to the car. While he’s being dragged up and down, the music syncs up with every time he goes up and down (1:58 in the clip). He then puts him into his trunk and enters his car. Throughout this whole sequence, the music gets louder to the point where it’s louder than what’s physically happening in the scene. Once the kidnapper is in the car, he closes the door. When he closes his door, the music cuts off and this eerie, violin comes in and out of sound pretty violently. This sets up the movie to say the least. The movie is about a black guy named Chris visiting his girlfriend’s house for the weekend, to meet her family and all that. However it takes a dark turn when he eventually finds out that the family has been kidnapping various black people and transferring their brains into their bodies. Some diegetic sounds from the scene happen when the guy is talking on the phone and to himself. Other diegetic sounds are crickets in the background, his footsteps, and when the car drives by and parks. The music is diegetic and non-diegetic at the same time. When the car parks both times, the music is diegetic as the guy can hear it both times. However it becomes non-diegetic when the music amps up in sound and is blasting and at the same volume, if not louder, than what’s physically happening in the scene. The guy panicking and being choked is diegetic. The guy’s feet being dragged across the floor, and trunk and driver door slamming is diegetic. The only pure non-diegetic sound is the violin being played at the end of the scene. This scene sets up the rest of the movie and sets the mood for the viewer. The song being played in the scene is Run Rabbit Run by Flanagan and Allen. This sets the mood because rabbits are often used as test subjects, and black people are essentially test subjects in this movie. When run rabbit run is being played, it is referring to the guy, so I’d say its pretty creepy. I think the timbre of the song sets up the scene pretty well seeing as it contradicts the whole mood of the scene. It’s a happy song with instruments that are playful in a sense. That playful song playing while a man is being kidnapped is like the formula for a creepy scene out of a creepy movie.

The connection between rabbits and test subjects makes a lot of sense! I hadn’t thought of that before. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but the director Jordan Peele released a movie earlier this year called Us that also uses rabbits as an important symbol.
