Blog 6 – Apolo

As we are aware of how things are seen differently over time, in the Ghanan culture and use of “Baamaaya” has changed drastically in purpose over time.The significance of the dance and music overall in the singular culture over time varies, changing from something casual to an event exclusive to funerals. When first created, “Baamaaya”, translated to “fields are wet” first originated as a form of rain dance. Over time, this culturally changed to be a norm in days of grief, only performed in funerals. In accordance to culture, men are expected to dress as women and perform a dance that is divided into two sections. This came to be as a result of violence, the murder of many women. 

In terms of “Rite of Spring”, over time, the singular melody using the flute has stayed the same. However, the purpose of the musical composition of “Rite of Spring” over time has changed to entertain, being a part of a grandiose theatre piece. The music in itself dictates what is being reflected on stage by ballet dancers. Overtime the message or purpose of the musical composition has stayed intact. Throughout time people have started to appreciate the concept of abstraction, and how Russian Igor Stravinsky implemented this in addition to live ballet performance.
