The dance “Baamaaya” was an important part of Ghanaian culture in the past. According to the textbook, a possible origin for the dance was that it was used to bring rain for the village during a period of drought. The drought was present because a man had committed a crime against a woman, which angered the gods. In order to appease them, men had to wear women’s clothing and dance until rain came. The dancing could be a seen as a form of punishment for the men. However, during the present time, the dance is now used mostly during funerals. While the dance still carries some negative aspects, such its use in a sad circumstance and the somber warning proverbs, everyone during the dance seems to be enjoying themselves. Compared to the suffering of a drought, the circumstances of the dance in the present time seems to be much lighter, which could overall be considered a more positive version of the dance.

Similarly, the ballet “Rite of Spring” also had a very negative background tied to it. During a time when ballets were generally considered to have graceful imagery, “Rite of Spring” was viewed as comparatively repulsive, causing it to be hated by many audience members. As a result, the ballet did not have many more performances. However, during the present time, the ballet managed to be recovered. While the tone of the music and dance has not changed at all, the ideas of the audience have. The new modern audience has dropped any expectations of what ballet should be and instead view “Rite of Spring” for what it is. By doing this, people can see that the ballet is very effective for what it is trying to accomplish, giving the piece a much more positive reputation overall.

  1. Hey! I agree that the people dancing the Baamaaya seem to be enjoying it. Even though both circumstances in which the dance was performed were rather stressful and/or depressing, its pretty clear that the performers put their all into the performance. As for the “Rite of Spring,” I also agree that the change from the past to present is a positive one. Its pretty interesting seeing that people were able to become more open minded about the creation of something completely out of the ordinary.
