Blog 7 Corrales

Both of my parents originated from Latin America, but I decided to focus on the music from Colombia (where my dad is from). More specifically, I’m focusing on Cumbia, which is a folkloric genre of music and dance that is popular in different parts of Colombia (especially Medellin). Cumbia originates from the 17th century when African slaves were brought to Colombia where the genre eventually became more popular there. The specific origins of this genre are often debated, but it is agreeable that this genre derived from three different cultures: African, Indigenous, and European. With the different cultures involved in putting Cumbia together, there are different instruments and cultural aspects within the genre.

According to one source (Discover Colombia), “The African influence gives the rhythm of the drums while the indigenous based flute blends in the melody. The European influence provides some variations in the melodies, choreography and costumes of the dancers.” Overall, Cumbia music consists of a combination of percussion and wind instruments. According to Discover Colombia, there are three different flutes used (there are male and female flutes called “gaita macho” and “gaita hembra” respectively). There are also drums from Africa, such as the bass drum, merry drum, calling drum, and maracas filled with seeds. The different percussion instruments help to aid in keeping a steady rhythm, while the flutes help to create and support the melody that is being danced to.

Today, Cumbia is normally performed at night during carnivals or festivals in Colombia. However, many different musical groups have developed their own unique recreations of Cumbia. It has definitely become more popular because of this, and it isn’t always seen in its most authentic form due to how much its been recreated, but both forms are awesome and unique nonetheless.

  1. This type of music is very unique but also so interesting to learn about. I was surprised to see that one of the main instruments was the flute since I expected drums to be the main instrument being played.
