My ethnicity is Colombian and African. Colombia is known for being named the “land of a thousand rhythms.” It is most popular for its cumbia. It brings together three cultures which are African, Indigenous, and European. The European culture brings about the costumes and choreography to the dance. The Indigenous culture brings upon the flute to the melody within a cumbia song. Finally, the African culture brings rhythm by using drums. Cumbia was made from slaves and the word “cumbe” means dance. The instruments are flutes, maracas, an accordion, and African drums. Every year there is a festival celebrating cumbia music. From this festival, cumbia spreads around country to country and becomes recognized as a Colombian genre. To dance to cumbia, it is often related to swing. It is a simple dance where your feet step in a circular motion.

  1. I never had an idea that cumbia brings together three cultures, which I found really interesting. I personally enjoy listening to some Colombian cumbias, they are really catchy!
