I want choose the song “Locked Away” by R. City featuring Adam Levine. R. City (Rock City) is an American musical duo formed in 2003, Theron Thomas and Timothy Thomas. Adam Noah Levine was born March 18, 1979, he is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and actor. Adam Levine is the lead singer for the pop rock band Maroon 5. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California. “Locked Away” was released on June 29, 2015. The genre of the song is a dancehall and reggae fusion song. Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s and Reggae fusion mixes reggae or dancehall with other genres, such as pop, rock, R&B, jazz and drum and bass. According to Universal Music Publishing (Musicnotes.com) the song is written in the key of D flat major scale, with a tempo of 94 beats per minute. The song also had a similar hook from Captain & Tennille‘s 1979 single “Do That to Me One More Time“. The lyrics are heart touching, it talks about issues in about any love relationship. The song has a consonant harmony throughout its entire video, which was very pleasing to listen to. In addition to the tempo, it was nor fast or slow, rather it matched the measure of the lyrics by the artists.
The reason I chose this song because the aspect of family stood out to me the most. It initially showed the man being the breadwinner and holding tight with the family, not that the song doesn’t support feminism. Instead, the females/moms in the video simply was shown as a stay home mom with their kids while dad was either a military man or a street man trying to hustle for his family. The gender role in this video does not point towards any dominant gender but it does portray the man to support the family financially. Maybe the mom works too but the role of the father came in both the situation to be falling back and finding a hard time to stay home. Another important key I saw in the video is a young adult teenage girl getting locked away in the police car while her father was trying to argue with the cops. I do not want to label/identify the girl’s sexuality, but she had a dark lipstick with a lot piercing and I can confidently hint the arrest was for drug usage. Aka you do not need to be a male to be only arrested, a female can be arrested too. The entire song portrays anxieties and insecurities in many relationships, but no matter how times was, at the end everything works fine, you just have to survive and push through on what’s going on. This music video confirms the gender roles of modern day time, it was released in 2015.
