The artist I chose was Colbie Caillat who is a folk pop and rock pop artist. I chose to write about her song “Try” which came out in 2014. In this song the gender role is discussing at first, how women are seen to be dressed, and present themselves in a way that women are suppose to be presented, for example, with make up on, nails done, etc. However as the song continues the lyrics change into something encouraging because Colbie is saying how us women, don’t have to try so hard to make themselves like-able. They just have to be themselves and not try so hard just to fit in, as long as you like yourself that’s all that should matter. Women don’t have to try so hard just to look like and act like they’re suppose to, they should just be happy with how they are and not worry about anyone else. I believe this song shows how it both rejects and accepts the gender role of women because, women should want to (if they feel like it, they don’t have to), put make up on or get dressed up they want because they want to be presented that way. They shouldn’t have to dress up or like pretty for anyone but themselves. They shouldn’t have to try hard to please society and the way the image women should be dressed and act, they should dress and act however they please and do it for themselves. A musical characteristic of the song is the melody, the reason being is because the song if very soft and slow but it helps bring out the emotion to the song. Since the lyrics are very meaningful, having the song go at a slow pace helps because it lets the listener listen to lyrics and be able to connect to the feeling and message the song is trying to portray.
