One of my favorite alternative artists, Bruno Major, recently released a single entitled, “Old Fashioned”. The song is about a guy wanting a traditional romance with the girl he’s falling in love with. The lyrics describe him wanting to put on his Sunday best, take the girl out on a date, give her his jacket when she’s cold, and walk her home to her front door. He also sings, “You’ll put on your favorite dress,” showing that he wants the girl to dress up as well. The singer takes on a masculine role while expecting the girl to fulfill a feminine one. There isn’t a music video, but the lyrics portray the story clearly to allow the listeners to imagine this type of scene. I’ve seen movies from previous time periods portray this sort of romance, which has been a stereotypical way to depict a first date. This concept (along with similar ideas like a guy opening the door for a girl and paying for meals) is still found in current romantic culture, but modern society also advocates for more equality in relationships where the man isn’t obligated to be chivalrous any more than the woman should be treated as if she wasn’t independent. Many of Bruno Major’s songs are very old-school romantic and portray the typical gender role of the man in a relationship.
