Out of the six historical periods of Western Art Music, the one that interested me the most was the Baroque Period (1600-ca. 1750). What excited me the most about this time period is the fact Opera came to be the new genre of that time because of the Italian humanist that wanted to revive the power of ancient Greek drama. The way the textbook describes Opera in this time period is that the basso continuo was the important feature that made Opera become popular. One of the instruments used in this time period was the Cello which is an instrument of the violin family. Opera also consists of vocal notes that makes any song piece sound very nice and calm for me, based on the concerts I attended in Carnegie Hall.
The composer I picked was Claudio Monteverdi. I chose his piece called “Magnificat”. The music does sound as what I expected from the textbook and from the few operas I’ve been to. The vocals make the piece even better with their low and high pitch. The instruments being played makes the song sound peaceful and gave me that smooth relaxing vibe.

Hey, I really liked the piece Professor Teeple played in class. I remember that it was from the Baroque period and I tried to find it to write my Blog. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find it and I went with the Romantic Period instead. Your post gave me a better introduction to the Baroque period, which I will research on my own. I learned from your post that Opera basically originated from Baroque period.
Hey Alejandra, I found it interesting that the Cello was a big part of the Opera genre, which I was completely unaware of. As well as also realizing that during the baroque period, their music was a mix of low and high pitch that gave the music that soothing aspect to it.
