The guitar was invented in the 19th century by Antonio De Torres. According to the textbook, the guitar is a lute instrument type, constructed by strings that are attached to and then run across and parallel to the resonating body. Strings are stretched along the neck of the guitar (76). The guitar falls in the chordophones category from the musical instrument classification system (85). The way the guitar works is by holding the neck with your left hand and plucking the strings with your right hand fingers. In order to make music, you can play chords such as the 5 major chords, E, A, D, G, B, C.

Although the guitar was made with strings to create a certain rhythm, in the 1930’s, the electric and bass guitar were invented. It is similar to the basic guitar, however, the electric and bass convert the strings into electrical signals using an amplifier. This is one way people used this technology in the guitars.

I do have experience playing both the classical guitar and the electric guitar. I enjoy playing them because it makes me feel relieved whenever I am stressed or bored. Overall, I personally think that the guitar is one of the best instruments ever made.

Niall Horan’s song, “This Town”, which was released in 2017, uses the acoustic guitar to create a conjunct melody and creating a polyphony texture. The guitar is the only instrument being played which creates a smooth and calm vibe/ melody, while Niall Horan blesses the song with his talented voice dynamics. As we notice in his music video, he uses a capo on the second fret of the guitar. This helps the song shorten the length of the strings which can increase the pitch of the notes etc. Despite the fact that the guitar seems like a simple instrument, it is mostly recognized in different genres such as pop, rock, mariachi and many more.

  1. I absolutely love this song by Niall Horan! I never really paid any attention to his guitar, but your post made me actually pay close attention to it and I noticed the capo he used. I also agree with what you said about the guitar having a very calming effect on the audience because every time I listen to this song, all my nerves calm down.

  2. I can totally agree that the guitar is one of the best instruments made. A lot of the songs I like to listen to always use some sort of guitar, mainly the classical guitar and it just provides that nice, balancing flow to the song every time. Personally, I have tried to play the guitar once from a friend and found it difficult to move from one string to the next really fast but it just made me want to try again and again.

  3. The guitar being the only instrument played in this song really brought the song all together and made it the song it is now. With the guitar being used in this song, it helps emphasize the calm feeling of the song, being its purpose, overall giving a relaxing feeling. Which is what the guitar usually does to song in most cases.
