In class this week, we explored how the social context of a piece of music can shift over time. The music’s meaning and uses can be completely different from when it was first created to now, since changes occur in audience, occasion, location, and style.

Select one piece of music that we studied on Monday (“Libertango” or “Baamaaya”) and one piece that we studied on Wednesday (“The Washerwoman’s Branle” or “Rite of Spring”). For each piece, consider how the uses and attitudes surrounding the music have changed by comparing past to present. What aspects of the music have stayed the same? Ultimately, do you think the changes you noticed are more positive or negative? Why?
