Song: Can I kick It? By: A Tribe Called Quest

A Tribe Called Quest loves to make the beat in their songs very loud. In this specific song, you can vividly hear the high hat and the snare so keeping on pace with the rhythm was not difficult at all. The tempo of the song does not change, however, the drums cut out at certain parts of the song making it seem as if the song slows down, but in reality, it does not. The dynamics of the song are also all over the place. At some points, the only instrument heard is a bass and at others, the beat is in full effect with the loud drums, bass, electric guitar, and vinyl scratches. There are also points in the song when there is a crescendo in the music and the drums come in at a fast and loud pace. This is a perfect song to choose because the instruments used are not continuously heard throughout the song and for the most part are not heard together, rather spread out through the song.

  1. In class tomorrow, we’ll actually be talking about the method used to create the beat for this song–sampling! Thanks for posting this throwback, it makes me want to pull out my old 80s hip hop playlists.
