My family originated from Turkey on my paternal grandmother’s side. As Sephardic Jews, much of the music that was listened to was either in Hebrew or in Ladino, otherwise known as Judeo-Spanish, which is a Jewish language that has a mixture of Hebrew, Spanish, Greek and hints of other languages. The music listened to is usually very upbeat and is majorly influenced by the same two instruments. The first instrument is the Darbuka, or the Goblet Drum. The darbuka is a single head membranophone with a goblet shaped body. The second instrument is the oud. The oud is a short-neck lute-type, a pear-shaped stringed instrument with 11 or 13 strings grouped in 5 or 6 courses. Today, my family still listens to music that was created as early as the 18th century. We also have five or six goblet drums around the house that we use every once in a while. One of the most famous songs written in Ladino is called “Kuando El Rey Nimrod” which was written in the 18th century. There is no official recording of the video, but attached is a modernized version of the song that also includes both the Darbuka as well as the Oud. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qsz-Wes_Rhk
