The Romantic Period (ca. 1820-1900) is what stood out to me the most because the part that captured my attention is how music started to “infused with emotional intensity”. Although, the time period was extremely different from our 21st century, I hardly know and believe that music can change a person’s mood from one state to another. Also, the part that excited me was reading about the dark world and the supernatural so I can already imagine the sound of their vocals. The textbook mentions that industrialization and nationalism coincided with The Romantic Period. Through my knowledge of industrialization maybe new instruments were presented in that era. This period may also have brought new music ideas or new methods to music. The textbook describes music as the first to touch upon human’s emotion and be individualistic. I say that because the reading also mentions that “Intimacy was also valued”.

I picked Giuseppe Verdi because his first name stood out from a brand that I know. The first piece I listened to was “La donna è mobile”. Yes, I imagined the music just as the same because when I thought of The Romantic Period I imagined the music to be a French or Italian type of feeling at a ball room. The textbook mentions how Romantic Period’s writers explored the dark world, so I listen to a Macbeth piece from Verdi and I felt like it exactly matches with that evil and conspiracy feeling of deceit.

  1. Hey! I honestly had a hard time understanding the Romantic Period, but you helped me gain a better insight on it. Personally, I also agree that music can completely change a person’s mood. It’s interesting to me that the Romantic Period revolved around such darkness.
