The piece of musical technology I chose to write about is the synthesizer, otherwise known as a synth. A synth is an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals that may be converted into sound. It takes files that have a specific noise on it that can be of a musical instrument, such as a piano or flute or a random noise such as a car horn. It takes the file and with the built in controllers, the audio is played. Most of the time a synthesizer is controlled by a musical keyboard, but can also be controlled by many other devices. The synth can take that audio and based on what key you choose on the remote, the synth will change the the sound of the audio. I have never personally used a synth, but I have used a keyboard that uses the same technology in which the keys on the keyboard play an audio file that is stored within it.

This video I chose is a few people using a microphone to record their audio and then putting it into the synthesizer so that they can recreate the song “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. Without the synthesizer, all of the different instruments used would not be able to be layered on top of one another.
