Blog #2 – Dorian Apolo

The song that I have chosen is “FOoL fOr YoU” by ZAYN. The artist is English, from Northern England. As known, ZAYN was previously in a band and eventually separated to follow a Solo career. Then he worked on his own music and released albums such as Mind of Mine. The genre of this song is R&B; Alternative R&B. I like this song in particular because it gives me a sense of calmness with the use of the piano. I chose this song specifically because of the contrast between the pitches that exist. This goes back to the vocabulary term Timbre. Timbre is described as every instrument or voice creates unique sound or color differentiating from each other. “Every sound has a particular color or timbre” (pg.28). In terms of the song, we can appreciate the main timbre of the piano and the singers voice. Throughout the song, the artist elevates the pitch of his voice reflecting contrasting timbres, in a singular sound. Additional sounds that exist are contrasting instruments and the use of repercussions and slow tempo. Another reason why this song is appealing to me is its catchy melody. Melody is the unit of pitches (tones) which you would sing or mumble to. “one might say that melody is the tune; it is the part of a song or composition you go away singing.” (pg.18) The melody in this song is easy to learn, and is of course mainly focused in the voice of the artist. In some parts of the song the melody comes in higher tones, in a louder sound consisting mainly in the artist’s voice.
