The song I chose for this blog was Stay by Rihanna ft. Mikky Ekko which was released on February 12, 2013. I absolutely enjoy playing this song in the guitar because this music piece is so calming and smooth. Rihanna’s music fits in many genres such as Pop music and Reggae. She is considered as one of the most best selling music Artist worldwide. With her amazing talent, I fell in love with most of her songs which are so catchy and emotional for me.

The melody of this song fits as a conjunct melody. The piano which is the main instrument throughout the song has short distance pitches. The unit of pitches do sound in succession, one after another. The piano structures the entire song with the same pattern notes which is the reason why the harmony of this song is considered as consonant. The harmony sounds pleasing, relaxing which is my favorite thing of this song besides Rihanna’s voice dynamics.

The texture of this song was sort of tricky for me to identify. I was in between monophony and homophony texture. However, I think that Stay fits more in the homophony texture. We can tell that the piano goes along with the voices of Rihanna and Mikky. Rihanna’s and Mikky’s voice can be considered as the melody and the piano can be considered as the harmony. Lastly, the song’s form fits as a verse chorus type.

  1. Hey Alejandra, I noticed that as well that the piano does go along with the voices of the artist within the song, They both coincide throughout the song following the exact tone of the overall song, the piano really brought it all together.

  2. I love your pick, this song is so great! It’s very emotional and they sound great! I also agree that this song is a monophony because the piano is the only accompaniment and when they both together it is in one melody.
