One of the three clips I chose to elaborate on is the “1.21 Gigawatts” from Back to the Future (1985). The movie is revolved around a teenager, Marty McFly, who is accidentally sent back to 1955, where within the clip is trying to figure out how to get back. Ironically he goes to Doc, the person who accidentally sent him to the past, for help but is found helpless given the lack of resources. Within the clip the need 1.21 Gigawatts to supply the sufficient power for the time machine to work, therefore the name of the clip. But with the lack of plutonium their only chance to power it is to get power from the lightning bolt that is supposed to occur next Saturday night within the clip.
Essentially the clip itself contains a diegetic sound, as well as a non-diegetic sound. At the beginning of the clip, Doc and Marty watch a future recording of Doc on the T.V, this is considered be the diegetic sound within the clip, which signifies the difference of resources amongst the past and future, which leads up to the brainstorming of trying to figure out where to get the sufficient power for the time machine. As the clip progresses, the Doc says the only way to generate the required amount of power is from a bolt of lightning, which then Marty figures out that there will be a lightning bolt striking a clock tower at a certain date, due to his part of a newspaper from the future. As the scene occurs music is brought into play, that starts up slowly to give a suspense feeling to the scene. After the Doc checks the piece of the newspaper himself, the music starts to speed up, which occurs as he starts brainstorming an idea to “harness” the power. The overall tempo of the music speeds up along the brain storming scene, to signify his thinking process, and overall the resolution of their problem.

Personally, I think that the use of the diegetic and non diegetic sounds helped show a good connection between the past and the present. Without these sounds, viewers wouldn’t be able to fully understand the mood/tone of that particular clip. The tempo, showed how everything was fast paced which correlates with thinking and brainstorming.
I like how you described how each diegetic and non diegetic sounds connect with the scenes. I personally think that this was one of the clips that had less diegetic and non diegetic sounds from the rest of the clips.
