I would be most comfortable at a jazz club because the environment and music is more relaxed than a chamber music recital or a symphony orchestra concert. At a jazz club, I would expect to see the performers on a low stage or close to the audience, using instruments such as the saxophone, piano, double bass, guitar, and drums. I’d hear the performers playing lively music or standards that the audience could sing or dance to. The music would have a relaxed sense of rhythm (swing) compared to an orchestra, which plays at a set tempo and beat. As a listener, I would be sitting down in the audience, casually participating by applauding after each improvised solo. In this past year, I’ve attended jazz concerts in multiple settings such as Bar Next Door, the Walker Hotel, Jazz Gallery, and Birdland. All of these settings vary in formality such as how one should dress or if talking is allowed during the music, but in general they are relaxed in terms of the audience being able to participate with a “whoop” for the soloists or clapping during the song. I would be least comfortable at a chamber music recital because I am accustomed to watching an orchestra rather than an ensemble. My personal experience with seeing a chamber music recital is limited, whether it be in-person, online, or on television. I would find it enjoyable to be able to hear individual performers within the ensemble but would prefer to hear a fuller sound coming from a larger group.
