I originate from the small country of Bangladesh in South Asia, where classical and folk music are few of the most known genres in this ethnic group. Amongst these genres, Rabindra Sangeet is a genre that is known the most in the country. Rabindra Sangeet are songs that were written and composed by the poet Rabindranath Tagore, a 1913 Noble Prize winner in Literature and originated from 1875-1941. These songs are both very popular in Bangladesh and India. The songs are characterized by its expression of romanticism, and cover topics such as nature, humanism, psychology, modernism, structuralism, and etc. The main instruments that can be heard in this genre of music are the flute, tanpura (a type of string instrument), ektara (a single string instrument), tabla (percussion), and the piano. However, in today’s rendition of this genre, other and newer instruments are also being used such as the guitar and techno music. This genre of music is not generally popular worldwide but it is popular in South Asian countries. Although most people in my country and in India now listen to pop music that is influenced by western cultures, Rabindra Sangeet still remains to be as popular as it was in the 1900s. Today, this genre is still sung by well-known music artists like Arijit Singh, who is immensely popular in the Bollywood music industry.
