Having parents who come from Mexico, I was raised to know the traditional songs and dances that have originated or that have become extremely popular in Mexico. One genre that is very well known by many is called the Son Jarocho. This genre originated in the state of Veracruz in the beginning of the 19th century. To the people of Mexico, the word “Jarocho” is a direct indicator that the music being played is from Veracruz because that is what you would call a person from that state. It first originated at an event that is hosted by small towns, known as a “fandango.” This musical genre includes elements that have been borrowed from Spain, Africa, and from the indigenous people. An improvised melody is very common in Son Jarocho. The most common rhythm used in songs belonging to this genre is a 6/8 meter. The most famous instrument that is used is the diatonic harp that has 32 to 36 strings. Another instrument that is commonly used is the Jarana, which has ties to the Spanish guitars used during the Baroque period. I believe that the Son Jarocho genre has become apart of popular culture. For example, one song that is from this genre is “La Bamba.” This song is known all over the United States. There was even a movie about a rock n’ roll artist, Ritchie Valens, who sang this song.
