Many spiritual forms of music pay homage to their respective deities and incorporate scripture or sacred texts within the lyrics of their music. The Sufi Dervishes of the Melevi Order are no different. The Melevi Order’s song and dance have many similarities to the Buddhist chants. Similar to the Buddhist monks using their chants as a form of meditation, the dervishes perform a physical form of meditation through spinning. The spinning is supposed to represent the orbiting of the planets. Their goal is to reach perfection and to rid themselves of ego. The dance pays a remembrance to Allah .

The two are similar in that in Buddhist chants their chants come from sacred scripture and their music is more centered around meditating on teachings and to quiet and center the mind. The Melevi Order also performs these dances and song to pay homage to their deities and to also meditate.
