According to the textbook the Mavlevi are a subset of Sufi Islam. The mavlevi adhere strongly to music and faith. Sufis use music to obtain a high level of spirituality. Mavlevi worshiping involves a ceremony called Sama. Sama is dancing and twirling. The twirling is supposed to represent a souls’ entry to God. .

Kol Nidre is the Yom Kippur evening service. In Kol Nidre we ask G-d to absolve us of all our unkempt promises. Similarly to the Sema it a plea for G-d to allow us in. We ask him to absolve us of our unkempt promises and start Yom Kippur cleanly Congregants stand still quietly. the cantor’s voice goes up in a crescendo. .

  1. I did not write about Yom Kippur so it was interesting to read more about it. It is interesting how different places around the world still manage to have similarities between them. I wonder if anyone has truly discovered what started all these similarities.

  2. I find it very interesting that the Mevlevi order has so many things in common with so many other religions. I don’t know much about Yom Kippur, so I found it fascinating that the same idea is also being portrayed through both of these religions, which is to “plea for God to let us in”.

  3. I also wrote about Kol Nidre! I also compared the fact that during Kol Nidre you have to stand still quietly with your full attention and respect.
