The thriller movie “Get Out” (2017) centers around a couple (interracial), Rose (born into a wealthy family) and Chris. Throughout the movie’s timeline, Rose introduces Chris to her family. Rose’s family resides in an all white neighborhood. However, all the “help” they have working for their family was Black. Chris comes to the realization that all of these black workers were kidnapped or lured into being hypnotized/brainwashed by Rose’s family in order to replace their minds with a person of their own race. This movie focuses on the exploitation of black people and brings about a lot of systemic racism. In the scene provided by the link, viewers are able to see a black person who got kidnapped and this scene is important since it builds suspense and is used as a way to shock viewers and hook them into the plot.
In this particular scene, some diegetic sounds that were evident were footsteps, grasshoppers/crickets, as well as dog barking. Ultimately, these sounds help build up the suspense/ create the scene by portraying a dark setting that is very quiet – signaling that the black man is all alone, helpless and possibly in danger. (Most people associate darkness with horror and is a time where danger is most likely to occur). Additionally, viewers can hear the sound of a car, that had the song “run rabbit run” by Flanagan and Allen on the radio, slowly following the man but stopping once the man turned around and started walking the other way. Once the car sounds stopped, the song got louder. The song is a nondiegetic sound and the lyrics of the song is what is important because although the melody had a positive and happy tone, the lyrics and the setting it was played in was what made it creepy. The song builds up the suspense to show the audience that something bad is about to happen and that the character in the movie should run away. At the very end of the beginning scene, there are violin or string sounds that were high in frequency and suspenseful. Putting this sound in the beginning scene shows that it will be the sound or music that will keep recurring throughout the movie. One musical characteristic that is crucial in the scene is how editors used a happy melody in such a dark environment which made the scene even more creepy and suspenseful because of the contrast. Without the music, the scene would make viewers assume that the character is just going on a walk and nothing “thrilling’ is about to occur.
