I decided to choose the opening scene of “Get Out.” In the opening scene, you see a dark skinned man walking in a very lonely neighborhood. It starts off with him on the phone with his friend saying how uncomfortable he is in the neighborhood. As he hangs up and begins walking, you begin to hear many diegetic sounds such as the crickets chirping, the sound of the car, and the music that the car is playing. As the car pulls up next to him, the man begins to feel anxiety and turns around to start walking the other direction. As he looks at the car, he notices that the car door is open and the music played from the car becomes non diegetic because the volume is very loud against what the characters can actually hear. Finally, when the masked man chokes the black man and takes him to his trunk, we can hear another non diegetic sound as the opening credits begin.
This opening clip provides suspense throughout the movie where later on in the movie, another black man is almost killed. The black man later in the movie was almost killed when he found out he has been abducted and learned that the white people in the house wants his body. The opening scene provides this sense of abduction from the kidnapping that occurred with the black man in the opening scene.

  1. I really like how you explained the way the sound connects to the overall sense of the movie. I agree that it helps to enhance the intense anxiety felt by the character and the ominous tone that would be further emphasized throughout the movie. I also think that the song and the lyrics played are essential to this feeling evoked by the scene.
