I chose the song Alexander Hamilton, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. In 2015, this song was used in one of the most popular musicals, Hamilton. The song showed the audience a historical story about the American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton such as how he grew out of poverty and worked hard to stay alive/make change during the American War of Independence. Lin-Manuel Miranda was an American composer, lyricist, playwright, and many more. He was inspired to create this sort of rap song ever since he read a biography about Alexander Hamilton and soon after, gained a great recognition. This song came to mind as one of my most favorite, catchy songs I listen to a lot and was introduced to me by a friend of mine.

In this song, the melody presented consist of a combination of both conjunct and disjunct. In the beginning of the song, disjunct occurs after the performer asks a question in his rap in a slow manner while a piano is being played in the background to set a sad atmosphere. Soon after, conjunct occurs as he starts talking about Hamilton’s background which is when the piano starts playing faster. Then, the beat drops in a fast pace as a crescendo suddenly appears when the performer talks about the change Hamilton is going through in the middle of this rap. As Hamilton’s name gets repeated, it is done so in a decrescendo and the beat isn’t too high or low but just steady. Towards the end of the song, there is polyphony presented when all of the voices of other characters were interacting with the performer’s line and their voices together sets a high pitch.

  1. I also really enjoy this song and this musical! Some other musical elements of this song that I like are the harmony of the supporting chorus in the latter half of the song. The voices really help outline the determined and unstoppable feel of the song which describes Hamilton well. Another part of the song that I like is the dramatic dynamic shift from loud to soft right as Hamilton appears. The sudden somberness as Hamilton enters sends a powerful message about his life.
