The song I chose was “Praise the Lord(Da Shine)- A$AP Rocky ft. Skepta”. A$AP Rocky is a rapper apart of a hip hop musical group, ASAP Mob.This Hip Hop song was released with in the month of June in 2018. Definitely a song with a unique beat, one accompanied by an uncommon instrument, the Bolivian pan flute, considering it was a hip hop song. Personally I enjoy playing this song while I am driving, it gives off a calm vibe, with a little upbeat feeling to it.

The aspect of this song that really intrigues me is the pace of the beat, how the fast paced beat gives an overall good feeling to the song. The overall rhythm of this particular song is consisted of a fast aced tempo, having the song be revolved around a duple meter. Considering the song having a duple meter, the song was constructed to give off a calm, yet fast rhythm.

The Timbre of this song is what makes it different from most hip hop songs at the time, especially now. The use of the Bolivian pan flute on the beat throughout the song gave the song a relaxed feeling when hearing it, considering the Bolivian Pan flute is a woodwind, where within the Hip Hop industry is rare to find in it’s music industry.

  1. I love this song! This song has that unique beat to it, that you mentioned, that just makes it very catchy. I did not know that the flute that was used in this song was a Bolivian pan flute. The flute is the main instrument that is heard throughout the song and I think that’s what makes it distinct from other rap songs. You also did a great job mentioning the pace of the beat in the song, it really showed the significance of it.

  2. Hey, I actually don’t think I’ve ever heard this song but I definitely just fell in love with it! I totally agree with Farzana when she said the flute is what makes it distinct from other rap songs. I also feel like the flute is the reason that it gives off the calm vibe you mentioned. The beat is definitely essential to the vibe(s) this song gives off, its what makes the song really catchy and upbeat.

  3. This is probably one of my favorite songs off of TESTING. I usually don’t like UK rap but Skepta really just flows on the beat so well. I also really like the sample used in the song which is actually panpipe.
