P!nk is an example of an artist who breaks gender boundaries with her music. A lot of her music, especially her song ‘So What’ , is angry and prov active. She goads people into fighting with her and she most definitely has an ax to grind. Most female pop singers stick to songs abut love and heartbreak. P!nk sings about her family troubles and what it was like growing up with divorced parents (“Family Portrait”).

In “So What” P!nk asks “so what”? So what that shes single or not conforming to society’s view of women being peaceful. This music relates to many women who are frustrated with society telling them to shelve their anger an be “composed”. The harmony “na na na na” gives the song its menacing and teasing tone. Its such a fun song to sing along with!

P!nk rose to fame at the same time as Christina and Britney, but P!nk never acted or sang like them. P!nk’s music is angry and though provoking at a time when most of her contemporaries are singing about “genie sin a bottle”.

  1. P!nk is a perfect example for this blog. That is why so many people love P!nk, because she breaks away from traditional gender roles. She makes her music exciting and you never know what she will do next. This song is a great example of her breaking away from the view that women are supposed to be composed.

  2. I’ve heard this song before and I agree that she breaks away from traditional gender roles. She shows how “normal” girls act, while she is very explosive and her own person.
