Pick one of the following film clips:
- Opening Scene from Get Out (2017)
- Ride of the Valkyries/Helicopter Attack from Apocalypse Now (1979)
- 1.21 Gigawatts from Back to the Future (1985)
If you aren’t already aware of the story for the scene you picked, look it up online; in a few sentences, tell us what’s going on in your clip and the movie as a whole. Remember to use quote marks and share the source you’re citing if necessary.
Next, identify some of the diegetic sounds (including music) from the clip; are there any nondiegetic sounds?
Recalling our conversation in class this week, what does the music add to the clip? Does it tell the audience something about the story, characters, or plot? Does it establish an emotion or mood for the audience? If you aren’t sure, try watching the clip without sound to compare. Be as specific as possible, naming at least one musical characteristic that you think is important.

The movie of “Back to Future” is about a high school student Marty in 1985 used the time machine which was built by his friend Doc to travel to 1955. Since he was in 1955, he tried to fix the relationship between his parents and between his friends. But the biggest challenge for him is how to travel back to 1985. He needed Doc’s help to find the enough electricity power to start the time machine. The clip indicated how Doc was amazed by 1985’s technology and finally they figure out a bolt of lightning might be their only hope.
The diegetic sound includes the electronic noise from the old TV and VHS recorder; and the sound when Marty click the recorder. The non-diegetic sound started when Marty looked at the flyer and suddenly felt the hope of returning to 1985.
When Marty look at the flyer and realized he knew the time of lighting; the trumpet started with a long pitch; the melody is slow and crescendo; implied the audiences that their hope is arising. Then the flute joined in; the beat was shorter and shorter; the tempo was faster and faster as Doc looked at the flyer. It represented many little ideas would gather and the adventure journey is going to launch. The audiences would feel excited and expected something miracle would happen.
Hi Wendy,
Can you create a new post for your blog instead of leaving it in a comment? It makes it easier for me to track, and allows your classmates to comment on your writing as well. Thanks!
