The artist that I chose for this blog is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known by his stage name The Weeknd. He is a three times Grammy Award-winning Canadian singer, songwriter, and a record producer. During his early life, he was never shy about his vocal talents and performed throughout high school. He dropped a mixtape in 2011 called House of Balloons, which helped push his music career towards the top. He then got to work with Drake on his album, Take Care, where he also got to put some of his songs from his mixtape. This landed him a deal with Universal’s Republic Records and then his career just skyrocketed from there.
I chose the song Call Out My Name by The Weeknd from his album My Dear Melancholy. This song falls under the genre of R&B/ Soul and Electropop. It was released on March 30th, 2018. This song represents a very emotional heartbreak. The lyrics and the tempo of the song display the pain that the artist was feeling. I enjoy this song a lot because I also can feel his pain and I can also relate to it.
The harmony that is represented in this song is consonant. This is because, alongside the vocal, the piano and the bass all work together very smoothly. To add on, the background vocals also help add to the harmonies. Timbre is also depicted in this song. The entire song is based around percussion, the piano is the main instrument used throughout the song. When the chorus drops, you can also hear the drums. There’s also a transition in the dynamics of the song where it goes from a mezzo-piano to a forte. The song begins with the piano playing in a soft tone and then The Weeknd’s vocals come in. As the song continues and reaches the chorus thats when you can hear the drums playing as well as some background vocals. This is a crescendo because the volume gradually increased.

I actually really like this song. I love how you explained the pain that can be felt through listening to this song because I definitely agree. I also like how you explained the change of dynamic with the introduction of the percussion and how the song ultimately revolves around the beat. I can definitely hear how the beat fits around the words and helps bring emphasis to certain words that are essential in feeling the pain that is being sung about.
