The purpose to create notation technology is to preserve the music for the future, besides, many composers experienced the difficulty to preserve their music because of many new kinds of instruments are introduced to the audiences, such as the new timbre’s form and new textures needed to be preserved correctly.  By reading the modern notation, readers can reproduce the music same as the composer design to it.  Notation can indicate almost any elements of music, such as pitch, rhythm, meter and harmony.   

            Musical notation is both prescriptive and descriptive. (P.300) Although the modern notation system can almost preserve any elements of the music, many musicians still can expand the original composer’s design to the different interpretation, then to create the different kind of music.  Jazz music is the typical example of it.  The music I choose is “Black, Brown and Beige” by Duke Ellington; this piece are also called Jazz Symphony.  The technology help to innovate and to create the notation, and by different interpretation of the notation, another kind of music was innovated.
