After our discussion of several different concert traditions, and listening to all the different types of concerts, I would be most comfortable at a jazz club. This is because the environment in a jazz club is more relaxed and more lively compared to the other concerts. Jazz clubs are not as formal as the other concerts because the audiences eat and drink and have conversations amongst themselves while the music plays in the background. To add on, jazz music is improvised as it is played, which gives the performance a more free feeling. According to the textbook, ” Musicians are expected to create and develop new ideas in the moment, with the same ease as two people having a spontaneous conversation.” (Page 665). This concept of music being created in the moment is something that I would be more interested in. At a jazz club, I would expect to see instruments such as trumpets, guitar, saxophones, drums, and trombones. The music that I expect to hear is upbeat and happy music that you can dance to. Since the jazz club is a more relaxed environment, as an audience there aren’t many expectations that we have to meet. I have seen live jazz performances on TV and I have seen the audience being very active or just sitting at a bar and drinking while the musicians played in the background. We are able to enjoy the music however we like.
This relaxed and free environment is an enormous change from how it is at a Symphony Orchestra Concert. In this type of concerts, the audience is expected to follow certain rules. They are expected to come to the concert dressed formally and they are also told to turn their cell phones off before the concert even starts. To add on, the audience is expected to listen to the music quietly without any conversation. I would be the most uncomfortable in a concert like this because I enjoy music that are more active instead of having to sit in a concert quitely for hours. Although, orchestra music sound pleasing, I would not be comfortable listening to it for hours without falling asleep.
