The song I chose for my blog is “Umbrella” by Barbadian/American singer Rihanna and featured by American rapper Jay-Z from her album “Good Girl Gone Bad (2007)”. This pop genre music has been awarded several times and this song became the biggest hit of 2007. This is the first song that I like to listen, whenever it’s raining outside. Mostly when I am walking in rainy time. Besides this, Rihanna is very famous for adopting various musical styles. So, I like almost every song from her.
The first thing I can hear in this song is drum sound. The cymbals sound of the drum set is unique in the song which is timbre. The cymbals sound continues in the song every five to six seconds which makes the song amazingly distinct. This song has used chorus “When the sun shines…” and “eh eh eh eh” becomes the hook, these are also the best part of this song. Since this song has a female melody, male melody, and drum set sounds together so I think its texture is polyphony. This song goes from low to high in the beginning and from the middle to the end, so the song “umbrella” has crescendo dynamics.
In addition, this song has a short distance between the pitches so it’s the conjunct melody. Regarding the rhythm, slow tempo beats in the middle of the song is astonishing. The most melodious and consonant part in this song is when Rihanna sings “You can run into my arm……”. The form of the music sounds happy and bright to me, so I think this song contains major scales.
