There are several different concert traditions. In my opinion, one that I would personally feel comfortable to be in, as one of the audience members, is a symphony orchestra concert. As we listened in class to Mozart’s Symphony No.40 in G minor, I observed the crowd, and I would feel most comfortable here, as I personally liked how much space the orchestra had between the audience. With this distance I would be able to see everything widespread, and would enjoy the space, as the instruments being played would not be drumming into my ears so loudly, but instead, I would be hearing a peaceful melody. Even though the orchestra is a large composition, the space between the audience and the orchestra would make it a peaceful event. Furthermore, I would expect for their to be a conductor conducting the orchestra, and within my view, I would expect for the listeners to act and sit quietly to listen to the fast and slow movements within the symphony.

Afterwards, a concert tradition that I would feel least comfortable in would be in a Jazz Club. In my opinion, as we watched in class “A Night In Tunisia” by Gillespie, I would not be comfortable within this environment. As multiple instruments were being played, like the trumpet and the saxophone, seeing the little amount of space there was between the audience and the concert, the concert did not look eventful for me. This is because, by having the instruments being so loudly played so close to the audience, I would not be able to see visually all the members playing their instruments and I would have a hard time hearing all the instruments, as I believe, a trumpet being played so close to me, I would then only be able to hear the trumpet and nothing else. Moreover, in a jazz club, guitars, drums, bass’, saxophones, and trumpets are played. Lastly, I would expect for the audience to have conversations with others and drink drinks, that are being served. The area did not seem like a suitable environment for people who are claustrophobic. This type of environment seems less comfortable for me to attend,  than a symphony orchestra would be.

  1. Hi! Joanna, though I find symphony orchestral music least comfortable. But after reading your blog I think I should go to this kind of concert at least once. I might like the fast, slow, dance, and fast movements of the symphony as well as enjoy orchestra tunes; woodwinds, brass, and the strings.

  2. Hey Joanna, I can definitely agree that symphony orchestral performances would be the most comfortable. I didn’t mention that the audience would be peaceful like you did, though I definitely alluded to it. While I can enjoy and appreciate the musical qualities of the jazz club, I think the reason I would feel “uncomfortable” there, would be the conduct of those around me.
